Author, artist, transportation activist
Ted Dewan at euroGel 2006 from Gel Conference on Vimeo.
Cars drove dangerously fast on Ted's residential street in Oxford, England - until he began installing activist art on the street. It brought the community together (even the mayor got on board), slowed the traffic, and improved the experience for everyone involved.

A terrific presentation on how the automobile has usurped our communities at the expense of the pedestrian. In the US, even in communities that pretend to restrict commercial development like Cary, North Carolina, the environment is still openly hostile to people who walk or bike. I wonder if Mr. Dewan has heard of James Howard Kunstler, the author of The Geography of Nowhere?

As a matter of fact, James Howard Kunstler was a speaker at the very first Gel in 2003. And Fred Kent, also well known in this field, will be speaking in a few weeks at Gel 2009 - http://gelconference.com/c/gel09.php
